The Grain Industry Association of Western Australia welcomes today’s announcement by the State Government for a new metropolitan facility for the Department of Primary Industries and Regional Development (DPIRD).
The $320 million investment by the McGowan Government will see the development of a world-class biosecurity and research facility on Murdoch University’s Perth campus.
The modern laboratory and technical workspaces are expected to be completed during 2027 and will support around 350 staff..
GIWA Executive Officer, Peter Nash, said the announcement was a positive commitment by the State Government to WA’s primary industries, including the grain sector.
“This investment highlights the importance of agriculture in our State and is something for which GIWA has been strongly advocating for a number of years,” Peter said.
“It is encouraging to see the State Government commit to supporting our industry, enabling it to continue significant research and development work well into the future. The benefits of this will extend beyond just farmers to all sectors of the agriculture and food value chains, and ultimately to all Western Australians via the contribution this industry makes to the State’s GDP.”
GIWA is co-located with the Australian Export Grains Innovation Centre in DPIRD’s existing South Perth site, and both organisations are expected to move to the new Murdoch facility when complete.
