Several members of the GIWA Wheat Council toured AGT’s wheat trial site north of Toodyay last week. Michael Ahn, Dion Bennett, Larisa Cato, Peter Henning, Jacinta Kelly, Tress Walmsley along with Peter Nash and Nadia Chiang then joined the remaining members in Northam for the Wheat Council meeting.
At their meeting, the Council discussed a variety of matters including the noodle wheat supply and quality outlook for the upcoming harvest and for the longer term, segregation planning in the bulk handling system, early stage work towards restarting a soft wheat industry in WA, and the process by which the Council will have input the WA Grains Industry Strategy 2025-2035 currently being developed by GIWA.
As harvest gets underway, the Council will be receiving regular updates on noodle wheat receivals and it will then make its recommendations to the Japanese Ministry of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries (MAFF) and the Japanese Flour Millers Association (JFMA) on the preferred AWN and APWN blend ratio and protein parameters to ensure Japan’s noodle wheat requirements are met for the coming 12 months. These discussions will continue face to face when the Council hosts a MAFF & JFMA delegation in Perth in Jan/Feb 2025.
