The Council of Grain Grower Organisations Limited (COGGO) in Western Australia established the ‘COGGO Research Fund’ to invest in innovative research and development projects to the benefit of the WA grains industry. COGGO’s annual Research Fund investment in R&D plays a major role in assisting WA to maintain its market competitiveness and viability in the grains industry.
Projects can target any part of the WA grain supply chain which benefits WA grain growers. Funding for projects range from $20,000 – $75,000 per annum over a project life of one or two years.
2025 funded projects
We are excited to announce four successful recipients for projects for 2025. They are:
- Murdoch University ($148,400 over two years) “Developing high nitrogen use efficiency barley lines”
- Murdoch University ($100,000 over two years) “Screening early growth vigour germplasm to enhance the adaptive response to early drought in narrow-leaf lupin”
- SLR Agriculture ($75,000 over two years) “Emerging biological crop growth enhancers evaluated in an independent field based format”

Applications for 2026 grant funding
The COGGO Board is pleased to announce the call for expressions of interest for funding of up to $150,000 over a two-year period, commencing in early 2026.
COGGO will consider projects that target any part of the Western Australian grain supply chain and returns benefits to WA grain growers.
COGGO would especially welcome Expressions of Interest that seek to address the issue of cereal grains being delivered by growers being downgraded on the basis of starch quality as measured by the current falling number test. Specifically proposals that target either or both:
- A test that is quick to perform at grain receival sites
- Alternative accurate measures/proxies to test for the desired quality characteristics for wheat and barley.
COGGO is open to co-funding a suitable project in conjunction with other organisations or investors interested in addressing these issues.
The closing date for initial EOI applications is Friday 4 July. Accepted EOIs will be invited to submit a full project proposal for projects ready to commence in 2026.
